“Trying to look inconspicuous… lurking around the downtown core… it’s getting closer… closer… closer… it’s time!

We converge on the designated spot at the designated time. A mad dash to fill out the log sheets. Lots of laughter in the air. Meet and greet friends old and new. Dozens of cameras taking photos. Local TV station recording the event. A candy toss, children scrambling for the sweet treats. Prize winners announced. Another scramble for the group photo. More laughter. Final time is announced and there we were - gone.”

We just got back home from the local World Wide Flash Mob Event and we don’t believe we had so much fun in such a short period of time. It was hard to wipe the grin from our faces!

It just keeps getting better!

We woke up this morning with a feeling of grave agitation and high anxiety. Our hands were shaking, our eyes were watery and we had a driving desire to go outside. After a few minutes of searching our symptoms on the Internet we quickly found that we were suffering from “Obsessive Compulsive Cache Craving Syndrome” or OCCCS. There is no question, we are addicted to Geocaching!

You know that you are addicted to Geocaching when:

… a colleague brings out their Tupperware lunch box and you automatically reach for your pen to sign the log book.

… you can’t walk down a path without thinking, “Hmmm, that’ll be a good place for a cache!”.

… you type in your home co-ords and not the phone number.

… your idea of decorating the Christmas tree is to conceal all the presents at its foot, beneath a camo covering of tinsel.

… your idea of gift-giving is to hide the gifts in the garden with co-ords and a clue.

… you are watching TV and think “That’s a beautiful place, I wonder where the nearest cache is?’”

Do you want to bring your Geocaching to another level? Do you want to share your love of Geocaching with others? Join a Geocaching club!

When we first got involved with Geocaching we were not aware of any local Geocaching association or club. Although we were still a part of the world-wide community and enjoying Geocaching immensely we missed the interaction with others that hold a similar interest. Since discovering a Geocaching club we have found that our interest in Geocaching has greatly increased and we are enjoying it a whole lot more! Not only have we met a lot of other Geocachers but we have also added another element to Geocaching by attending and participating in local events.

Associations and clubs bring people together from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Collectively, club members can achieve great things from organizing events and social gatherings to lobbying for local policy changes, as well as have a whole lot more fun! This is a perfect example of where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

We received our Bronze EarthCache pin today! This is the result of our EarthCache finds on EarthCache Day a few weeks ago.

The package we received from the Geological Society of America’s EarthCache Masters Program contained our Bronze pin, a 2″ sticker that has the EarthCache logo on it and says “I am a Bronze EarthCache Master” and a short note stating:

“Congratulations! You are now a Bronze level EarthCache Master. Enclosed is your Bronze EarthCache Master pin. You are now only 3 more EarthCache finds (one in another state or country) and set up your own EarthCache to become a Silver EarthCache Master.”

It is ’signed’ by the EarthCache Grandmaster. How cool is that?!

Are you ready to be a part of Geocaching history? Join in on The World Wide Flash Mob Caching Event!

On November 10, 2007 Geocachers from all over the world will gather in their home locals to celebrate Geocaching. This “Flash Mob” gathering of Geocachers will last only 15 minutes long and you must be present and sign a log sheet during this time to claim the event.

A ‘flash mob’ is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, do something unusual for a brief period of time, then quickly disperse.

We spent another great fall afternoon Geocaching at a local park. This time we chose Hemlock Ravine Park, so aptly name because of the abundance of hemlock trees and a ravine. We haven’t been here in years and we were thrilled to have Geocaching give us the opportunity to return.

The historical significance that surrounds this park is that this 197-acre wilderness was originally the home to John Wentworth, Nova Scotia’s lieutenant governor in the 1780s. In 1794, he lent his home to England’s Prince Edward who landscaped the grounds, including adding a heart-shaped pond. This pond is named “Julie’s Pond”, after his companion Julie St. Laurent.
