It was a great time as we mingled about, chatted, laughed and relaxed with friends old and new. Stories were swapped, tales were told and plans were made for the upcoming months. The atmosphere, added to by the ambience of the pub, was one reminiscent of trappers coming in to town after a long winter. Mmmmm… there are a lot of similarities:

The old adage about ‘short and sweet’ was never more true than this year’s GeoFest. With the impending arrival of Hurricane Bill the festivities were cut a bit short BUT a great time was still had by all!

As with Geofests of the past Atlantic GeoFest 2009 was held at Blomidon, a Provincial Park located on the cliffs of the North Mountain, overlooking the Minas Basin, here in Nova Scotia. With over 1800 acres of natural attractions, majestic trees, trails and wildlife the park is the perfect place to let Geocachers out to play.

The cachers began to arrive on Friday afternoon and continued to arrive into the early evening. With the forecasted storm, many of the expected attendees regrettably did not arrive but those who did proved to be faithful campers who showed what Caching Campers are really made of!

Friday evening was spent relaxing around the GeoFest Café, chatting into the wee hours of the morning. Several cachers who missed last year’s event took part in the ‘Night Cache’ which was set up specifically for the annual Geofest.

We had a wonderful time this past weekend at the Cape Breton Highlands Park Event that was held in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park here in Nova Scotia.

The 950 square kilometer (590 sq mi) Cape Breton Highlands National Park with its spectacular highlands and ocean scenery is located on Cape Breton Island, on the northeast tip of Nova Scotia, Canada. The world-famous scenic highway, the Cabot Trail, runs through the park.

The event was part of the park’s First Annual Geocaching Weekend, of which the highlight was the introduction of the park’s new Geocache series, the ‘EcoCache Geocache Challenge’, and the release of the cache coordinates.

The Ecocache Geocache Challenge is a five part series of Geocaches that the park developed with the help and support of the Atlantic Canada Geocaching Association to introduce people to our natural and cultural heritage.

Each of the caches takes you to a different trail within the park and in order to complete all five Geocaches you will hike between 17 to 21 kms and drive from Chéticamp to Ingonish. Total time for this series of Geocaches will be 6-9 hours. (They do not have to all done in one day! )

When you complete all five of the caches, you receive a limited edition Parks Canada Geocoin.

We just returned home from a fantastic week in New Mexico and during our trip we were able to meet up with an awesome bunch of local Geocachers at a Meet and Greet event in Albuquerque.

The New Mexico Geocachers are so hospitable and accommodating that we’re still talking about it!

Here’s how it all began…

A couple of months ago we made plans to visit New Mexico, in the Albuquerque and Santa Fe area. One of the first things we did after our flight and hotel arrangements were made was to seek out some caches. We found from past experience that there’s no better place to start than at the local Geocachers website so we went to the New Mexico Geocaching website forums.

Once there we found a thread that was started by Goldfinch& Lady Goldfinch from Lansing, Michigan who would be visiting around the same time as we were. They were inquiring if there were any local events during their visit. Now here is where the New Mexico Cachers really start to show their true colors – since there were no local events in that time frame they quickly put together one to coincide with their visit and appropriately called it An Albuquerque Welcome!

Here’s a couple photos from the event:

We had a great time on Saturday at the annual Nova Scotia Geocaching Spring Kickoff. It was a fantastic afternoon of getting together with friends and family!

This is the fourth year for this event and it gets better every year! As in past years it was held at Curly Portables in Enfield, about 30 minutes outside of the Halifax city core.

This year saw the biggest turnout for this event with 102 Geocaching teams signing the log. This translated into a total of 161 people attending! There were several people from out of province, from as far away as Ontario, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. There were even some Geocachers who arrived that did not know that the event was going on – they logged in, met some new folks and had a great time!

We shared a table with our friends, the ‘Geotrekkers’, and spent the afternoon exchanging caching stories, travel experiences and caught up on recent news. We had a lot of laughs as we spoke and joked with other cachers who dropped by our table and those we met as we walked around dropping by other cachers tables. We also had a great meal. Yes, it was definitely a party.

In addition to the great food there was a bunch of prizes to be won, a 50/50 draw and a Travel Bug auction. The door prizes included carry bags, caching goodies, t-shirts, a ready-to-go Geocache, a set of unactivated silver provincial ACGA coins and more.

Once again the Cape Breton Geocachers here in Nova Scotia held an excellent event and once again we were unable to attend. However, once again, stagunner was so kind to send the following post along, telling us about the great time they had:

What a better way to celebrate the changing of the seasons than to have a Geocaching event and see the splendor of some beautiful islands. This year’s Cape Breton Celtic Caching Challenge event on October 18th was a great celebration!

We did some difficult thinking when selecting the date for this event, but this date proved to be the most suitable. It turned out to be a nice cool fall day with just enough sun to keep it warm while caching.

The event was held near St Peter’s on Cape Breton Islands, and was done in a few stages. First of all, the cachers had to do their part and participate in the Hiding challenge. It was planned this way to get more cachers out to hide some good caches. The next part was to have the event, a gathering of cachers near the St Peter’s Canal, a chance to load up waypoints and go explore some different parts of the area. As it turned out the technical difficulties were not at this end of the cache downloads. Everyone was worried that the caches would not get listed on time, But the back up plan worked out just as good, Down Home Girl and stagunner had the data available to the event participants, good thing as the caches did not get listed until later in the afternoon.

The Chebucto Adventure and Dining Society (CADS) met again tonight for another great outing! This time we met at Pilot’s Pub, on Atlantic St. in Dartmouth.

Pilot’s Pub offers a menu of traditional pub fare. It is located overlooking Halifax Harbour and offered us a spectacular sunset with the city of Halifax in the forefront. This alone was worth the visit!

<img src='http://www.geocachingonline.com/geoblog/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/10_16_08_local_geocachers_meet_at_pilots_pub_01.jpg' alt='Local Geocachers Meet At Pilot's Pub' />

There were well over 20 local Geocachers, members of the ACGA, and their children in attendance and everyone had a great time chatting and eating. We can only say that the meals served looked good and from the smiles it appeared that everyone enjoyed them. Because of our schedule today we opted to just have dessert and tea, a habit that we could quickly get into!

Here are a couple of photos of the happy cachers:
