Prior to having to leave the Blomidon Provincial Park because of Hurricane Bill we had the chance to do some caching along the Jodrey, Woodland and Bordon Brook trails. These trails lead to and meet at the Look Off Trail which, once at the end, offers a fantastic view of the Minas Basin.

Our hike took us up the Jodrey Trail, then out on to the Look-off Trail and then we came back down the Woodlands Trail and then on to Borden Brook Trail.

The Look-off Trail is a short trail, only 1.6 km (1 mi.) that ends at a viewing station that offers views that makes the whole trip worthwhile. You get a great view of the Minas Basin as well as Five Islands Provincial Park which is located about 24 km (15 mi.) across the bay.

The Jodrey Trail is a 6 km (3.7 mi.) long trail that skirts the 183 m (600-ft.) sea cliffs with numerous viewing stations along the way overlooking the Minas Basin. This trail winds through a sugar maple, yellow birch and beech forest and near the park’s only bog. At Indian Springs Brook, a cairn commemorates the gift of 162 ha (400 acres) to the park by the late Roy Jodrey.

Last month we received a notice via the TB Watchlist that Pepper, a small, huggable stuffed bear, that we moved across the country last September is no where to be found. After viewing the logs of the other three TB’s we see that two of them were picked up but never released again.

We found Pepper on 9/17/2007 in Gathai’s Secret Stash, near a great park just off the Crowsnest Highway, BC on our way to beautiful Christina Lake. Once home, or over 4000Kms later, we dropped him off at The Troll on 10/03/2007. On 03/24/2008 a log entry noted that Pepper was not in the cache.

Hey, we just stumbled across a type of cache that we were not aware of before, and it combines another one of our passions – books!

These ‘book caches’ combine the concept of ‘bookcrossing’ (the practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise) with Geocaching. It’s the ultimate book exchange!

The concept is simple – take a book, leave a book. A few of the book caches are themed and you should only exchange like books. As well, ensure that the books are protected from the elements.

While going through our bookmarks we came across this great video introduction to Geocaching by Sue from Team-Tiki that we would like to share with you today. Filmed as a Geocaching tutorial it features a hunt for “Koz’s Kliffside Kache” in the Hemlock Overlook of Clifton, Virginia. Combining instruction, humor and a great soundtrack it gives an excellent overview of a Geocaching hunt.

Although this was filmed almost a year ago it is a timeless piece that both experienced Geocachers and those new to the sport can identify with. So much so that we have added ‘Run Through The Jungle’ by Creedence Clearwater Revival to our iPod Cache Mix.

Here’s a great way to keep in touch with your fellow Geocachers – The Geo-Post Office! This type of cache has been around since the spring of 2006 and the idea is to move postcards between Geo-Post Offices until they reach their destination. It sounds like a cool, fun way to exchange postcards between you and your Geocaching friends.

Geo-Post Office caches are specifically placed with the purpose to hold postcards. Each postcard is to have a short message and a forwarding address on it. The address is to include the name of the Geocacher that you are trying to send the postcard to, their home city, and a destination cache. Here’s an example:

We converge on the designated spot at the designated time. A mad dash to fill out the log sheets. Lots of laughter in the air. Meet and greet friends old and new. Dozens of cameras taking photos. Local TV station recording the event. A candy toss, children scrambling for the sweet treats. Prize winners announced. Another scramble for the group photo. More laughter. Final time is announced and there we were – gone.”

We just got back home from the local World Wide Flash Mob Event and we don’t believe we had so much fun in such a short period of time. It was hard to wipe the grin from our faces!

It just keeps getting better!

We had the opportunity to attend a local Geocoinfest yesterday and had a great time!

GeoCoinfest is an international event that is put on to get Geocoin collectors together to meet and trade. The first Geocoinfest was held in Temecula California with over 400 people attending. Since then it has been taken up in various cities of the world. A quick search on GC showed 24 scheduled events in the US, Canada and New Zealand.

Our local event was attended by more than 50 people and spirits were high. Great conversation and laughter filled the room throughout the course of the afternoon. A silent auction was held that led to quick bidding as closing time drew near. There were also lots of great prizes donated by various sponsors.

Parks Canada has just made a press release announcing their new guidelines for Geocaching on their managed properties including national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas. Not only is Parks Canada welcoming Geocaching, but they hope that these guidelines will also encourage Geocaching in these areas.

Although these guidelines may seem restrictive to place a cache (they require you to contact the individual park involved where a Parks Canada team will then guide you to place a cache, in the selection of the location, the container to be used and the content) they will ensure the directive of the Parks Canada Caches (ParkCache?) which is to promote aspects of the particular location. Instead of the traditional trade items ‘ParkCaches’ will include a personal story, anecdote or information about the location.

We have just read two news articles that came in within hours of each other – one where a government department has banned Geocaches on public lands, and one where a government department sees Geocaches as a boon to increase tourism in their area. Two different views on a controversial issue right now.

Although Geocaching is over 7 years old it is still experiencing tremendous growth and because of this we can expect to see a lot more of this two-sided view of our sport.

The positive note is that like most agencies or locations that ban Geocaches do so with the intent to review the situation. This is understandable since the concept of Geocaching is still alien to a lot of people.

Our fingers are crossed that once the understanding is gained they will see the benefit, as we have, and allow Geocaching to continue. And as long as Geocachers continue to conduct themselves in a positive manner we feel that this will hold true.

Keep on cachin’!

We recently became aware of the upcoming International EarthCache Day on October 14th, 2007. This is the second annual day of its kind and looks to be a great day for all those interested in Earth Sciences and Geocachers alike.

International EarthCache Day kicks off the tenth annual Earth Science Week which runs October 14th to the 20th, 2007. The purpose of Earth Science Week is to promote awareness of the status of Earth Science in education and society. Since 1998 the American Geological Institute has organized this event in an attempt to help the public get a better understanding of the Earth Sciences and to encourage stewardship of our planet Earth.

An EarthCache is an educational dimension to Geocaching. When you visit an EarthCache site, you learn something special about Earth science, the geology of the location, or how the Earth’s resources and environment are managed there.

On International EarthCache Day you are invited to visit or create an EarthCache site in your area. So let’s all make a day of it – have fun and learn a bit while we’re doing it!

Keep on cachin’!
