11/26/08 - Geocaching In The NewsNov 26, 2008

Yep, we’re still here! :) Unfortunately, we have been so busy lately with everything but Geocaching! We had a harddrive failure several weeks ago and we were without a computer for several weeks. When we did get it back it took us a couple of weeks to get things installed (we still haven’t even installed GSAK!). With winter coming (and it’s here now!) we had to get the garden ready for it’s annual sleep, clear the summer fun furniture off the patio and try to get those things around the yard that we have been putting off since June. Then the snow came and of course there was the… LOL! Ahh, the fun never ends!

Anyway, we’ll try to catch up with several Geocaching related news happenings that have been going on:

11/09/08 - Geocaching In The NewsNov 09, 2008

Marcie Thiery, her husband Robin and their six year old son, as well as Ivan Grieve are featured in this article here.

Here’s an interesting tidbit from last month, seems police found a Geocaching ammo box on Highway 10 in Elk River, Minnesota. We’re not sure if they logged their find. :) Check it out here.

Our friend, Headhardhat, over at the ‘I’m Not Obsessed’ blog posted a great article last month on the UNC JayCee Burn Center Geocaching Event that we would like to bring to your attention in case you missed it like we did. Please take a moment to read about it here.

More kids are turned on to the fun and rewarding hobby of Geocaching in Grand Falls, Montana in this article here. 7th-grade student Justice Beckner said, “It was kind of fun and confusing at the same time.” So true, so true… ;)

Not only is caching fun and rewarding but good for your heart too! (But we already knew that! :)) The Heart and Stroke Foundation offers this informational article here.

And finally, an update on the HooHaa GeoChallenge Race, the Geocats Racer has a wide lead with 388.8 miles, EMC’s Cookie is in 2nd with 48.6 miles, HooHaa’s Quilt in 3rd with 2.3 miles, our GoGo Turtle is in 4th with 1.4 miles (2.2 kms!) and the others are all tied for 5th place. Go GoGo!

10/26/08 - Geocaching In The NewsOct 26, 2008

Joining the Geocaching tourism wave, The Halifax, Nova Scotia Regional Community Access Program (C@P) recently announced that they have developed the first Limited Edition C@P GeoCoin to be released in Nova Scotia. You can read more about this here.

And the Statesville Convention & Visitors Bureau and Carolina BalloonFest organizers added a new component to their annual three-day rally on the weekend - Geocaching! Read about it here.

Geocachers Nick Erno and his Dad, Chris, Jason Breedlove (who we know as Blazerfan), Mark Brazelton, Pat and Karen McNeilly are mentioned in this article.

The Masonic Geocaching Society is to be launched on Nov. 1st. The event is a chance for Geocachers to come together and find out about new Masonic-themed caches hidden across the country. You can read more here.

GPS Enterprises, LLC has announced that it is now making GPSr’s available for rent and off-road units are available for hiking, camping, and Geocaching. More info is available here.

Sorry we missed lasts week’s news post. Between a combination of it being Thanksgiving here in Canada and the fact that we had a massive harddrive failure (oh yeah, it was the big one!) we missed the deadline. But here we are again…

It’s Geocaching but it’s not Geocaching here at San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge where they have set up a ‘multi-cache’ to educate visitors about the refuge. You can read more here.

TeacherMike and Bat1800 from the Geocachers of Northeastern Illinois are mentioned in this article about Science Saturdays, a monthly event offered in Chicago in conjunction with the city’s year long Science Chicago program.

Katherine Lanzer, a Geocaching newbie, tells of her trials and tribulations here looking for 12 caches created by the Great Bay Discovery Center in New Hampshire.

Snow Hill, Maryland is set to join the Geocaching and tourism band wagon with the introduction of a local cache. You can read more here.

The HooHaa GeoChallenge Race began this past Thursday with 8 contestants. This is a year long Travel Bug race with the winner being the one that traveled the most in the year. You can find out more here.

It was bit of a slow week for Geocaching in the news this week but still we were able to find several interesting articles:

Fifth graders at Brandon Elementary school in North Dakota are learning about Geocaching in their computer class. You can read more here.

09/28/08 - Geocaching In The NewsSep 28, 2008

Here’s something that sounds like a lot of fun - Cacheapalooza! It’s a fun-filled weekend of mostly ‘old-school’ Geocaching in the beautiful Jonathan Dickinson State Park in Hobe Sound, Florida. For more information drop by here.

We’re continually picking up snippets of information related to the Maryland Municipal League Geocache Trail. Apparently this trail is being created to promote the cities and towns of Maryland with a Geocaching connection. It certainly sounds like a big undertaking and also a worthwhile one. Here’s a bit more info. Here’s one of the latest towns to come on board. We’ll be keeping our eye on this one!

There’s new Geocaching software coming for the iPhone that looks and sounds like a winner. You can find out more here.
